Wedding Gowns
by Rev. Ray Cross
What bride hasn't dreamt since childhood of walking the
wedding aisle in a resplendent wedding gown? It's enough to make you
feel like queen for a day. But your wedding gown and the effect it is
designed to create should be pursued with utmost care.
Wedding Gowns Can Trip Us Up
In our culture,
we are not used to wearing hooped skirts and long, bustled gowns. So
wedding gowns can
trip us up in a number of ways. One relates to the length of the gown
and whether it has a tendency to settle while worn. Either one of these
may cause the gown to ride too close to the floor at the front making it
difficult to step forward without tripping by catching your shoe on the
hem of the gown. It's the reason hoops in gowns were designed, to keep the
hem forward, to allow for steps without catching on the gown. Without
the hoop, brides may find it necessary to raise
their gown at the front at certain times in order to safely step
forward. It is also wise to make small steps. Striding in a wedding gown
is not only risky but counter to optimum presentation of the gown. For safety, comfort and skill
a bride would should practice walking with their gown on the flat and on
stairs and uneven ground prior to her wedding. This is especially
important should the processional involve stairs since stairs exacerbate
the challenges of walking with a gown. Add
to the Impact of Your Wedding Gown
For maximum impact
brides should try walking with one foot in front of the other, rather
than out to the sides. To do this, tip you heal toward the center with
toes tipped outward somewhat. In this manner feet may be placed one in front of
the other without feeling like you are walking a tight rope; the toes
pointed outward providing a breadth for balance. If this walk is
perfected with small steps, the effect is as though the bride is on
rollers. The dress and body does not rock side to side, as with walking
with feet to the side. And the small steps reduce the up and down motion
of the body that causes the gown to swing back and forth. This gate is
even more valuable to bridal attendants since their dresses lack the
breath of the wedding gown, thereby accentuating the up and down and side
by side influences of a gals gate. Managing
a Train on your Wedding Gown
A gown with a train
presents further challenges. The train drags and can catch on things.
The track of the bride should therefore be studied to anticipate such possibilities,
and those who attend to the bride should be instructed to keep an eye
out for any snags, lest the bride be deprived of some part of her gown
along her way. When moving around a bride, therefore, attendants and the
father or family member who walks her forward, must be prepared to move
carefully lest they step on the brides train. On top of this, a train
means that the bride cannot back up; she can move forward or to the
side, but not backward. In tight situations attendants must be prepared
to lift and reposition the train so the bride can continue to move
forward in a new direction without tripping on her train. Managing
Space and Furnishing for a Wedding Gown
A
gown also means that a bride occupies more space than usual. Aisles must
be expanded to permit her processing, especially when walking beside her
father or another family member. The
Impression Made by a Wedding Gown is Worth the Challenges
With proper
preparation and adjustments a processional can fulfill all the dreams of
a resplendent bride. All the challenges are more than worth it. They add
