Wedding Reception Halls
by Rev. Ray Cross

There's nothing like good food in a pleasant atmosphere for building family solidarity, fond memories and lasting friendships. For a wedding of any size, therefore, the use of a banquet hall becomes essential. In choosing a banquet hall it is not wise to select one that offers much more space than is needed to house your guests comfortably. A few people in a large room tends to feel impersonal and cold. But then, you don't want to be packed in like sardines either. If the banquet halls available to you are not an exact fit, there are a number of things that you can do.

Keep an eye on the height of the ceiling as well. A room with high ceilings can accommodate more people comfortably, whereas as one with a low ceiling tends to become overheated, stuffy and oxygen deprived.

You might want to check on the air conditioning and heating capabilities as well. You cannot be too careful in caring for and providing for the comfort of your guests.

If Your Wedding Reception Hall is Smaller that You'd Like

Optimum placement of furnishings can make a big difference in the space available to your guests. Usually hall owners and operators have a good sense of what will work in their space for your needs, so present your needs to them a consider carefully what they advise. Don't settle only for usual, however, if another arrangement works better. If things are tight, use grid-work on paper or on your computer to move around pieces the size and shape of the furnishings to see how you might optimize the space. Often furnishings and decorations can be placed or moved so that the same opening can be used for two re more purposes, thus giving the sense of more available space to your guests. While configuring things, keep in mind the effect of lighting, especially concerning the head table. A large window behind the head table may seem like a good idea, but bright light behind the principals in a wedding, people that guests will look at often, will prove a strain to their eyes. As well, a bright light behind people affects photographic exposures--it turns off flashes, making people look like silhouettes. Unless drapes can be pulled on such a window, do not position it behind the head table.

If Your Wedding Reception Hall is Larger than You Need

How you place furnishings in an oversized hall can make it feel warmer and more intimate if this is what you desire. Screens or decorations can reduce visibility to unnecessary space. Decorations hung from the ceiling can make a ceiling that seems too high seem lower, without losing the open air necessary to a comfortable environment.
